Grey Matters
Forward-thinking investment dressing with my first purchase for 2026
I've made my first purchase for 2026. Not that I buy stuff and wait to wear it. I don’t have that much restraint.
But at this rate, it will be 2026 before I’m decked out in it. It's a touch too much for Twixmas, and the trousers need to be taken up. So, yes, a 2026 purchase.
The purchase in question is a grey suit. Clean, mid-tone grey, nothing shouty and spectacular, but a fantastic, dependable, classic wardrobe piece. The cut is where it earns its place in my wardrobe - oversized without looking like Tom Hanks’ character in Big, and fluid, relaxed trousers that read cool, not corporate.
I’d already been digging into spring 2026 trends when there it was: grey suiting across the catwalks at Victoria Beckham, Acne, Stella McCartney.
I bought it because it felt classic, it made sense in my wardrobe now and later, and now it aligns with the spring catwalks - bonus.
Not that would have swayed my decision anyway, I have to know the trends for work, always on the perimeter but never dominating my shopping choices. But good to know im in sync with spring's catwalk offerings.
The risk with a grey suit is that it can read boring, corporate or business. The way around it is plentiful; firstly, the silhouette. Proportion is what separates a suit that feels officey from one that feels modern.
Look for a longline blazer, and try a slightly oversized jacket to create distance from traditional suiting. Trouser shapes are just as important, and on the catwalks it’s all about a looser fit that falls straight or wide.
The trousers should pool lightly at the shoe; no break. A more cropped hem reads a little officed-coded.
Fabric choice is also integral; look for wool or crepe, a suit that falls and drapes nicely, not too stiff to give a louche quality and a sense of effortlessness.
Obviously, styling plays a massive role in converting the grey suit from boardroom to chic. And a grey suit is such a great canvas, allowing you to strip it back and put your own spin on it.
Use colour sparingly. A pop of red via a handbag, an olive-toned shoe, or a soft injection of pastel is often all a grey suit needs. These small, deliberate touches break up the neutrality.
Add interest with layers. A knit slung around the neck, pinned with a brooch, or tied around the waist adds a touch of nonchalance and transforms the suit's simplicity. I love all these styling ideas below.
I’m also adding this pic below to my grey suit styling inspo board; instead of layering over it, slipping on a contrasting blazer with texture feels super cool. And I love a brown/grey mix too.
It helps to go for an oversized style that allows layering underneath, and if you want to add some structure to an oversized style, belt it. I love the combo of the cord belt and gold embellishment double-tied around the grey suit.
The beauty of a grey suit is that it doesn’t have to arrive as a package deal. The pieces work beautifully apart.
Jeans and a blazer - you can’t get any more classic than that. The faded wash makes it feel a bit more modern.
Or go all black: dark denim or a tailored black trouser instantly adds contrast.
And the grey trousers combined with suede. I told you I was a grey and brow stan?
Another rift on brown, or more tan, and grey with this epic leather jacket and grey trouser combo. Adore.
Or add softness with a knit and keep the sleekness with a pointy shoe, or if you want to keep more casual, go for a ballet flat or minimal trainer.
I’m also loving what the spring 2026 catwalks are showing with mixed tailoring: combining different shades of grey in one outfit, or pairing a grey blazer with a contrasting tailored trouser, such as navy, for a subtle yet contemporary twist.
The grey-and-navy combo could easily read office-y. With high-waisted trousers and the right proportions on both pieces, plus a dramatic neckline, the look feels fresh. Another photo to add to my grey suit styling mood board for 2026!
And of course, I’ve done a round-up of grey suiting - you can shop it here!
