Another Substack where I profess my love for leopard
I feel like I talk/write about animal print a lot on this Substack, so much so, you could call it an animal print stan account. Need proof? Check out this post and this one, too.
Consider this Substack your regular programming this week, but hone in on the leopard-print coat. If you’ve yet to invest in a new-season autumn coat, or are looking to see what trends are in for the season, then one of the most fun pieces to add is a leopard-print coat, and it just happens to be everywhere, again, this season.
Do I need to let you know that leopard is actually a neutral? Or the leopard print in coat form can be traced back to the 1940s and 1950s, with everyone from Jackie O to Kate Moss donning the wild-printed style. Proving it’s far from a trend and firmly in classic territory.
Even Caroline Bessete-Kennedy, the clean-girl muse, had one and somehow made it look impossibly chic, understated, and totally covetable.
I know leopard can feel intimidating or loud for some, especially after years of minimalist dressing and quiet luxury.
But if you’re ready to shake up your wardrobe a little while still keeping things versatile, you honestly can’t go wrong with a leopard print coat.
And I don’t think you can go wrong with styling a leopard-print coat either. There’s no wrong way to wear it, no colour combo it doesn’t sit with, or print it can’t be clashed with.
Leopard surprisingly loves colour - a cobalt blue scarf, a cherry-red bag, even a pop of emerald green. Butter yellow? Stunning. Cream? Yum. Burgundy? Bring it on. Pink? Oh, so sweet. Camel? Chic.
It’s a print that can handle more than you think and will work really hard in your wardrobe - something we all look for in our coats.
Yes, it’s a statement; yes, it feels like a lot when you wear it; yes, you might get called Pat Butcher when you wear a faux fur option —but it’s entirely worth it.
Off duty with a knit, I love grey and leopard; it makes a simple knit-and-jean combo look a little more special.
But it’s the perfect coat for party season, effortlessly finishing off an outfit.
It’s one of those that can be thrown over a slinky slip dress, a nice top and jeans or a sequin number.
