I’ve gone viral on TikTok. Firstly, I must clarify that 'viral' means something different to me, and secondly, it's been a gradual process, literally spanning over the course of a year. Are 42k views viral?

Anyway, besides the point, a post I did with some inspo on how to wear the loafer way back in April 2024 is still being shared and saved daily.

It just goes to show one thing: the loafer is now a totally enduring shoe that can effortlessly slot into your wardrobe, after a slight crash course on how to wear them, courtesy of me, that is.

It’s a common question I get asked: what shoe to wear when you want to be comfortable yet elevated, smart, yet not hobbling after a day of wear? When a runner just won’t cut it, and ballet flats are a bit too cutesy? Loafers always got a bit of a bad rap in the past - the hard leather often needed to be broken in, or they would cut the ankles of you.

But that seems to be changing. The best versions I’ve seen lately are made from softer, more supple leathers that flex from the first wear. They slip on easily, mould to the foot, and save you from having to stomp around the house in thick socks to soften them up.

So comfort sorted, back to what to wear them with - nowadays, literally anything. Loafers have a funny knack of grounding or adding a little off-beat edge to any look - you can even pair a loafer with an Adidas tracksuit these days, and it looks chic. Similarly, a loafer/floaty dress - they are a wardrobe workhorse.

Bonus, you can wear them to work too, paired with tailored trousers or suits, or save them for the weekend with straight-leg denim.

They are also the perfect transitional shoe, and look great styled with a sock. I think it helps if wearing a dress and a loafer, it keeps the ankles warm but also adds a little fun.

The penny loafer style appears to be the most popular, offering a more timeless feel than the chunky ones from a couple of seasons ago. Black is a good all-rounder - I live in my black Whistles ones, linked below.

But, if you want something slightly different, lovely, deep burgundy brown styles add an extra richness and remain as versatile.

I adore this croc style as well - the texture and the shape just make them feel so elevated.

There has also been a suede invasion - word to the wise: living in Ireland, invest in some suede protector and give it a good coating before your first outing, and maybe check the weather forecast before wearing.
