The New Bohemian
Boho is back
Are you ready to dress like it’s 2004? If, like me, you had your formative years pouring over photos of Kate Moss and Sienna Miller in studded disc belts, ra-ra skirts and cowboy boots, you might be hesitant about bohemian’s return.
I won’t lie; I did feel triggered last year when the churn of noughties trends emerged, and I was in Urban Outfitters, where it seems all noughties trends live, when I came face to face with a disc belt. It brought me back to wearing it low-slung over a jersey dress layered over jeans and finished off with a cropped bolero. I must dig out of the photo, or maybe not. Lol.
But how does boho look in 2024? Enter the Chloe show at Paris Fashion Week for Autumn. This season, they’ve redefined boho with a new twist—haute bohemian. It’s a polished take on free-spirited styles that the high street has already latched on. While noughties boho might have felt cosplay, this boho era is much more grown-up.
Print is minimal, bar the odd floral, floaty number, with the prominent embellishment frills and ruffles. Chloe opted for a more refined orbit of sugary-soft pastels and earthy neutrals, which is a gorgeous way of doing boho 2.0.
Like any throwback or nostalgic trend, the key to making it work for everyday and real life is keeping one bohemian item in one outfit and wearing slicker separates.
Instead of wearing a wide-leg jean with a floaty blouse, opt for a clean-lined, straight-leg style for contrast. Or try a boxy, oversized leather jacket to cut through the breeziness of a floaty dress. Embrace the wrong shoe theory, and instead of reaching for a Western-style with more floaty styles, ground the dress with a chunky biker or trainer.
The new boho era is about contrast and balance, grounding the ethereal with the structure and making the nostalgic feel completely new.
