One of the most popular requests on my Instagram is what will I wear to an event? Whether it’s a spring nuptial, Confirmation, Communion or just a swanky summer get-together, it seems guidance is required.
And for good reason: there’s lots to contend with when getting dressed up for an occasion: weather, dress code, comfort, thinking you’re dressed up, or not dressed up enough. It’s a minefield. Or just being allergic to getting spruced up, that’s my problem.
Don’t get me wrong—I love a good bash and getting semi-dressed-up. And I love getting a client red carpet ready and revelling in it fully, leaning into the glam then. But, when it comes to picking an outfit for myself, it’s just not me to be spiffed up to the nines, and when I am fully decked out in my glad rags from head to toe, I feel like an imposter.
I’m not shy about embracing colour, print, or sequins; I need to feel relaxed and pared back in some manner. Alexa Chung will always be my red carpet-style muse. I strive for cool-girl glam. I'm not saying I’m remotely cool, but you know a girl can dream. One element of my outfit needs to be undone; whether it’s tousled hair or embracing the wrong shoe theory, I’m all for feeling like me.
That’s why, for this little occasion wear round-up, I want you to embrace your style tribe; what style reflects you when it comes to event dressing? Are you more of a modern princess vibe or mob wife? Or are frills or cascading ruffles non-negotiables when looking for a wedding guest dress? Or do you prefer to wear sequins all year and outshine the bride/host? Maybe your mob wife meets a modern princess, or magpie meets a minimalist? Or you can be a little bit of all; I know I am, as long as I don’t feel too gussied up, lol.
What’s your occasion-wear style tribe?
The Modern Princess
Pastels, ruffles, dreamy, romantic, you lean into pretty princess dressing, and you’re in your element when it comes to occasion season.
Mob Wife
AKA Italian glamour—think animal print, chunky gold jewellery, and lace in sleek silhouettes. You can bring your Mob Wife aesthetic into occasionwear.
The Minimalist
Less is less, simple, pared-back, and chic. You favour more uncomplicated silhouettes and neutral shades, but finish your look with graphic or architectural accessories.
The Magpie
Your vibe? Dripping in sequins no matter the season, with sparkle, shine and big jewels, you’ll like to look like the shining star of the occasionwear show.
The New Bohemian
It's not as prim as Modern Princess but more relaxed. You still like some ruffles and cascading fabrics, just more carefree.
The Colour Queen
From colour-blocking to monochromatic colour dressing, you’re the queen of adding bright hues and a dose of dopamine dressing to any occasion.
